 Martian starship captain Kang McAlmatov is rescued from the Navy that has branded him a traitor to hide the rot at its core. His friends - a parapsychic empath Sufi psychologist, an ursoid soldier gone AWOL and a silver cyboid seductress - have joined forces with a crew of pirates to liberate McAlmatov and expose the real traitors. But there are unseen obstacles in their path and disaster is never more than a few steps away.
