Review: Heavy Liquid

Image
"Nobody knows where the stuff came from. Like curdled solid chrome cake batter. Luis thought it came from outer space. It's a myth, like Bigfoot or Roswell. But for something that doesn't exist, I find it falling into my lap often enough." Heavy liquid.  S (a.k.a the Stooge) deals in the stuff. Corrosive, volatile, but if heated in just right they way it turns into a 'black milk' which, if you then put it into your body... New York, 2075. He stole a quantity of the mysterious substance from a crime syndicate who have now sent his goons (in disturbing clown masks) after him. Luckily for the clowns there is a big parade in progress and lots of people in fancy dress, so their grotesque disguises do not raise any eyebrows (not even the 'lifelike' distorted face of a screaming woman from Picasso's Guernica )... There's someone else trying to find him, too; a big man in a suit who seems to have a different agenda. S delivers his package to a go-betwe

FREE SCI-FI COMICS: Paper Girls

Image
Tuesday 1st November 1988, 4.40am. Twelve year old Erin Tieng is starting her new job, delivering newspapers (the Cleveland Preserver ) in Stony Stream, Ohio. It's not too demanding an occupation; all you have to do is cycle around town and throw rolled-up papers into front porches.  This morning has an added complication, though: roaming teenage hoodlums still in fancy dress from the trick-or-treating of the night before... Erin falls foul of a particularly obnoxious Freddy Krueger, but is rescued by the timely arrival of three more paper girls. They invite her to join them for strength in numbers. And it turns out to be a good decision because there are more costumed hooligans still roaming the streets. These ones look particularly strange, too: wrapped in black bandages from head to foot... The creepy thugs ambush one of the paper girls and steal one of her CB radios. Our four cycling heroines set out to get it back, confident that, together, they are a force to be reckoned with

Review: Prism Stalker

"Is this planet as strange as it seems?" "Stranger." Vep has been traded from Sveramad (an alienhive on an asteroid) to the Chorus on Eriatarka, a very unusual planet. The Chorus believes that she has qualities that will make her a valuable asset.  Originally she and her people, the Sele tribe, are from the planet Inama. When terrorists contaminated the ecosystem the Sele became refugees. For most of her life Vep has lived and worked in the hive, an environment constructed from biological technology.  Finding herself on a planet once more is a shock to the system.. and there are more shocks to come... The Chorus rules vast regions of space and is composed of many races, most of them not remotely humanoid. Their rule is not uncontested, however. They have enemies and they need warriors to maintain their territory.  In the case of planet Eriatarka, the enemy is none other than the planet itself...  Confused? Yes, it's a lot to take in. Review: Sweet Tooth

"Outside of the trees is fire and hell, so we's gotta stay here, where it's safe." But nowhere is safe.  Nine year-old Gus lives alone with his father in their little house in the deep woods. Beyond the fence that surrounds the woods is the outside world, which Gus has never seen. His Daddy tells him it's a bad place. He's right. Seven years ago the plague began. It spread like wildfire and most people died straight away. The few survivors cling to the remains of the world they once knew, but society has collapsed. Everyone has the disease and, sooner or later, everyone will die. Except the hybrids. All children born since the plague began are part animal to some degree. And they don't get sick... All that is left of the police or military is 'the militia' in their secure camp. Dr Singh works there, trying to find a cure for the plague. He is convinced that the hybrids are the key and he experiments on them to try to find a connection. But "br

The Earth is dead. Humanity killed it years ago and now lives in a network of orbital habitats scattered throughout the solar system. The habitats are huge constructs accommodating hundreds of thousands of people with new ones being built to handle the overcrowded populace.  Welcome to the post -post-apocalypse...  Ironically, space is at a premium, with most people living in tiny, cramped quarters. Only the rich - members of the corporations ('corps') that build the habitats - have the luxury of spaciousness. The psychological stress of this existence is ameliorated by the widespread use of medication, mostly the antidepressant "nudge" which is added to all processed food. Despite this, superstitious delusions are common, with people reporting strange phenomena: voices, ghosts, strange feelings of dread... Quasi-religious sects have cropped up everywhere. Life is hard and crime is common, hence the need for a police force; the Habitat Security Division (HSD). It'

Review: Judge Dredd vs Aliens - Incubus

Image
In the dark tunnels beneath Mega City One, no-one can hear you scream "Drokk!" Probably the most famous figure in British sci-fi comics, Judge Dredd is the post-apocalyptic policeman in the legendary 2000AD (first published in 1977). Survivors of the nuclear holocaust live in huge, fortified mega-cities, walled against the toxic wastelands outside and their hideous mutations. Within, law and order is maintained by the Judges, each of whom also acts as jury and executioner in order to dispense justice more swiftly and efficiently... and none is more ruthless than the grim, stoical Dredd; impassive and resolute as he carries out the instant death penalty on any perps that have earned it, with the motto "I am The Law!" Ridley Scott's Alien was the groundbreaking sci-fi horror movie, combining visceral terror with the chilling backdrop of the unforgiving void of outer space. The 'xenomorph' monster is an explosive blend of a wild tiger's ferocity an

Review: Savage Sasquanaut

Image
OK, here's a twist: instead of a monster from outer space coming down to Earth and scaring people, here's a monster from Earth boldly going out into the void and alarming the people there. By 'people' I mean aliens, but they are basically humans with four arms; our titular protagonist is much more exotic looking...  And calling Sasquatch - a.k.a. Bigfoot, the large hirsute humanoid cryptid of American folklore - a 'monster' may be a little unfair. Yes, he is very big and fearsome with claws, fangs and preternatural strength, but he is also capable of intelligent speech, with a fundamentally laid-back, gentle giant vibe about him. Not that he doesn't enjoy a good bout of rough-housing now and then - he sure does - but only when it is called for. Confused? Me too, but do try to keep up. For reasons best known to themselves, NASA decided to take Sasquatch, stick him in a rocket and shoot him into space. At this point, the rationale behind this is anyone's

Review: Astral Alliance

Image
How desperate must you be... to make a deal with the devil? In Astral Alliance, the third part of the Astral 'Thrill3gy' from writer/producer Jay Magnum and artist Ariel Medel, our protagonists face just such a dilemma. Earth has been infiltrated by a 'mimimorph' - a being that can impersonate anyone, even Lila, the Astral/human hybrid at the centre of our story. Andrews Air Force Base is destroyed by a tall, athletic, dark-skinned woman with an energy weapon for a left-hand. The same individual gains access to AXE Headquarters and kills the Secretary of State (in a very gruesome fashion)... Our heroes - tough guy DeVane, Russian boy genius Rob and of course out-of-this-world Lila - are soon back in action, battling the evil impostor. Cue more high-octane shenanigans, including a car chase on the freeway with lots of very dangerous driving and a super-powered tête-à-tête involving the rather novel combat technique of picking up automobiles and throwing them at your op
