When Amy's dad loses his job at the deep space mining station where they live, she and her parents have to leave for a new home. It is a long trip, 30 years of cryogenic suspension, leaving behind her best friend and everything she knows for a distant, strange new world: Earth.   As both an immigrant and a time traveller, there is much for her to adjust to. The gravity is greater and everyone walks around with net gear glasses, connected to the internet using augmented reality.   Amy is already a little different to most sixteen year olds; she experiences synesthesia , the translation of one sense into another.  To her, people have flavours. Her mother is mint, her father is hot chocolate. A routine brainscan when she comes out of cryosleep picks this up but the doctor assures her that this is no cause for concern, just a neurological eccentricity.   Earth is very different to how it appeared in the movies she used to watch back on the station. The sheer scale of everything is ov

Review: Gears of War

Image
"They say war is hell... War is not hell. In hell the innocent are spared." Are you looking for a feel-good read? Something nice and comforting to get lost in whilst curled up on the sofa with a big steaming mug of hot cocoa and some lovely chockie biscuits? Yeah... No. Sorry. Move along. This ain't it. Gears of War by writers Joshua Ortega and Karen Traviss and artists Liam Sharp, Simon Bisley, Leonardo Manco, Pop Mhan and Colin Wilson is the gritty, dark and very violent story based on the game by Epic Games. On the planet Sera two previously warring factions - the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) and the United Independent Republics (UIR) now battle the Locust Horde, a race of humanoids that inhabit the caves beneath the planet surface. Also known as 'grubs', these creatures use conventional weapons as well as aggressive native predators against the humans. GOG soldiers - or 'gears' - resembling American G.I.s circa 1968: grungy, muscle-bound gru

Halo: Fall of Reach - Invasion

Image
Invasion   is the third and final chapter of the  Halo: Fall of Reach   trilogy. Twenty seven years into the war with the Covenant, humanity is barely holding its own. The Office of Naval Intelligence plans to capture a Prophet - one of the ruling religious caste of the Covenant alliance - in order to attempt to negotiate a peaceful settlement. The newly-upgraded Spartans are tasked with this mission. Master Chief John 117 tests his new armour, which now has energy shielding and an in-built artificial intelligence called Cortana who provides him with technical and tactical data. He survives an intense obstacle course, proving his effectiveness. As Halsey says "Spartans make their own luck." However, all best laid plans go out the window when over 700 Covenant ships fall out of slipspace on a heading for the planet Reach. The colony, a stronghold of the United Nations Space Command, faces annihilation. But that's not all: if the Covenant gets hold of a UNSC ship berthed at

"Humans... your destruction is the will of the gods... and we are their instrument!" This is the message from the aliens who destroyed the farming colony Harvest, killing over 300 people and leaving the planet a scorched cinder. Halo: Fall of Reach part one Boot Camp ends with this chilling declaration. The alien ships have superior weapons and energy shielding, more than a match for the UNSC warships. To stand any kind of chance against this enemy, humanity must come up with something new... Dr Catherine Halsey of the Office of Naval Intelligence takes her Spartans to the planet Chi Ceti IV to collect some experimental new armour ('Mjolnir') that has been developed especially for her supersoldiers. A Covenant ship attacks their escort en route to the planet, and the newly enhanced warriors soon have their first field test, led by Master Chief John 117. Covenant , part two of Halo - Fall of Reach , sees our heroes pitted against opponents much more worthy than the

By the end of the 25th century, humankind has settled a rapidly growing portion of the galaxy. Under the dominion of the United Nations Space Command, and with the use of slipspace travel, over 800 planets have been colonised and populated. But all empires suffer conflict, and for the largest empire humanity has ever known, this conflict is terrible indeed. At the dawn of the 26th century, the UNSC finds itself facing a full-blown insurrection and the real possibility of endless civil war. Only one woman knows what must be done to prevent this war, and only she knows how much it will cost... Our story begins several years before the first contact with the alien Covenant. This is a purely human galaxy with very human problems; the eternal spectres of greed, oppression and war.  Halo: Fall of Reach is adapted by writer Brian Reed and artist Felix Ruiz from the novel by Eric Nylund, which is of course based upon the phenomenally successful game from 343 Industries. Part one, Boot Camp

Review: Vamp Nation From Outer Space

Image
Chicago, night time, in a rainstorm. A lone figure walks the dark, deserted streets. When he he reaches the entrance to a subway he senses a sinister presence. He unsheathes a strange glowing sword and ventures down into the shadows...  In Vamp Nation From Outer Space by writer Jason Dyjak and artist Ted Lody a small band of vampire hunters wage a clandestine war against the blood-suckling fiends, led by Thoth ("tote"), a near-immortal humanoid alien with special abilities. He is seeking an extraterrestrial amulet of great power, stolen from him after it was recovered from an ancient temple. Evil forces are at work, both on Earth and out in the dark depths of space.  There is much fighting: swords, laser bolts and alien monsters with plenty of explosions (these vampires turn into light when you kill them, making for some dramatic visuals, especially when one falls from a great height to be impaled on a church spire). There is also a car chase, time travel and an alien invasio

Review: Aphrodite IX - Rebirth

Image
The Aphrodite protocol was initiated in an attempt to save humanity from a predicted extinction level event. Its mission was to engineer humans that could survive via technological singularity and genetic enhancement to repopulate the Earth. It succeeded in unexpected ways and two factions arose out of the ashes of the old world, both occupying the same narrow strip of inhabitable land near the equator. In the East, various tribes of genetically enhanced humans collectively called the Gen live in a city called Genesis under a theocratic monarchy. In the west, cybernetically-enhanced humans reside in the city of Speros in a totalitarian party controlled state. Their centuries-long conflict is about to come to an end. In Speros a spacecraft is being constructed to establish a lunar colony. Before it can be launched it comes under attack from Gen warriors riding 'drakes' - huge flying reptiles - and is destroyed.  The cyborgs retaliate, giving chase in their airborne 'drones

Hyperphase

Image
Hyperphase (hyperdimensional phase transition) From the perspective of a traveller, it is the rest of the universe that becomes undetectable. The spacecraft is colloquially described as moving through “hyperspace”, though this term does not describe an actual spacetime reference point. The hyperdimensional field has a fifth-dimensional degree of freedom but the craft itself is located only within its own artificial bubble universe. Transition to and from hyperphase is accompanied by a distinctive glow of Cherenkov radiation (within the indigo to ultraviolet spectrum). This is caused by virtual gluons emitted by the propulsion field moving faster than the time-dilated photons from the craft itself. Whilst the craft is “in hyperspace” this glow continues from the perspective of the traveller as the radiation is trapped at the boundary of the hyperdimensional field. … from my self-published comic  Infinity Dragonfly:  https://scificomicnexus.blogspot.com/.../infinity ... #infinitydragonfl
