Review: Star Trek 2023

The Sisko has slept in light and shadow...

The Sisko must descend...

The Sisko must go...

... where no-one has gone before...

Three years ago the war between the Federation and the Dominion came to an end. Many sacrifices were made to bring that conflict to a close, many lives were lost, many were separated from their loved ones for reasons that made little sense to those left behind.

Nineteen year old Jake lost his father, Captain Benjamin Sisko. Not to the weapons fire of a Jem Hadar attack ship. Not the the random disruptor beam of a Cardassian soldier. He didn't die.... he was simply.... taken.

Taken by the Prophets. Into their Celestial Temple. They took him to exist with them, outside of linear spacetime. The Emissary. The Sisko. Why? Reasons no human mind can comprehend...

Now, just as mysteriously as he left, he is back. Returned to Deep Space Nine. To his family. His son, his wife, the daughter he never met. To Starfleet.

The Prophets ... the name given by the Bajoran faithful to the esoteric aliens in the stable wormhole the leads to the Gamma Quadrant - have sent their Emissary back into his old life with a mission to perform. Something only he can achieve.

Someone, somewhere, somehow, is killing gods. Species so advanced that their capabilities are indistinguishable from magic, are being slaughtered. What kind of weapon can do this? What will be the repercussions for the mere mortal races of the galaxy?

Sisko has to find this weapon and the one who is wielding it, and stop the wave of destruction before it becomes an all-consuming tsunami.

He needs a ship. He goes to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard for help, and - on the strength of his accomplishments, his valor, his legendary character - he gets one. And not just any ship.

And not just any crew...

The USS Theseus is an experimental prototype, owing much of its designs to a certain Montogermy Scott, a man who skipped through time by 'sleeping' in a ship's transporter pattern buffer for 60 years.

First Officer: Commander Data. Chief Medical Officer: Dr Beverly Crusher. Helmsman: Lieutenant Tom Paris. Science officer: a young Vulcan genius T'Lir. On Comms, ensign Lily Sato, Andorian.

One other crewmember is required, though he is busy being an Ambassador of the Klingon Empire. Can Sisko persuade his old comrade Worf to join their endeavour?

IDW Publishing has created a new saga with a constellation of stars from many different dimensions of the Star Trek universe. This is a rich feast for nostalgia lovers, whilst also introducing new characters and concepts. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing have reignited the imagination with bold new tales. Artists Marcus To, Rachel Stott, Oleg Chudakov and others have crafted stunning visuals with instantly recognisable familiar faces.

In films, novels and on TV, the stories of these iconic characters have been carried forward by many creative lovers of the Trek lore. In the medium of comics, their imagination is granted unfettered reign.

The mission never ends. Scotty  ponders what lies ahead as he prepares his new ship for whatever the universe sees fit to throw their way.

And I can hear this ship. I know what she wants.

She wants to GO....

... and BOLDLY.
