Review: Chiasm #0

I'm never gonna be normal, am I?

Nope! Sorry, buddy! We've traveled across time and space.

Trust me when I tell you...

Normal kinda sucks.

Desmond Phillips is being disruptive...

His classmates want to know why, if he had the surgery, does he still have to SNIFF the paper to read it? He explained that the doctors removed the tumour but his eyesight is still affected.

Chiasm by writer/artist Doug Knight is a semi-autobiographical story. When Doug was six he was diagnosed with cancer; a tumour located in the optic chiasm above the pituitary gland. Chemotherapy reduced the size of the tumour but it had already damaged his optic nerves, drastically limiting his sight. Not to be defeated by this, young Doug defiantly became an avid artist. When he grew up he became a tattoo artist and, more recently, a creator of comics.

All this despite being legally blind!

In Chiasm #0 we join Desmond as he returns to school after his operation to try and get back to something resembling normality. Little does he realise that, for him, life will be anything but normal from now onwards. His operation was far from the standard procedure: the surgeon implanted two intelligent alien molecules that became a part of him and helped him to fight the evil growing within him.

When his teacher - a macabre, creepy, authoritarian nun - threatens to punish him for creating a ruckus, it turns out that Desmond's enhancements can react to more than one type of monster...

In issues 1 and 2 we follow the boy's memory of the dream he had under anaesthetic during his operation, in which his new buddies gave him the ability to transform into an armour-clad warrior to slay the horrific bug-eyed, razor-jawed beast lurking deep within his brain.

It's no easy feat, of course, and this is a battle that requires great courage and determination. Spurred on by his new microscopic extraterrestrial comrades, however, this is one trial that he knows he cannot lose.

"Your sight is terrible ... But you have great vision!
