Review: Brute #3 - The Toughest Teddy Bear in the Galaxy

Image
" As for me, they call me Brute and you're about to find out why..."   He's small, furry, green and cute, but don't be fooled by his appearance. This diminutive emerald ursine sure packs a punch! Brute - The Toughest Teddy Bear in the Galaxy # 3   by writer Preston Squire and artist Owen Keenan drops us right in the middle of a desperate battle for freedom. On the space station Tars, outside the Milky Way galaxy, human girl Rose is on the run from her owner, a huge alien Crabi. Our tiny hero leaps to her defence, amply demonstrating his disproportionate physical prowess.  This issue is 90% action; Brute, Rose and her feisty cat Caesar against the big crustacean and his lumbering goons. These colourful, exotic characters leap across the pages with joyful energy, their complex fight a succession of one thrill after another.  We also catch up with the rag-tag multispecies crew of the Vanguard as they plan a heist, and the introduction of an intriguing new character ...

Review: Astral Vengeance #2

Image
Government conspiracies? Exploding space shuttles? Shadowy genetic research? Rampaging muscular demonic alien hybrid mutants complete with horns, fangs and razor-sharp claws? It's all in a day's work for scientist Jeannie Lewis, caught up in a complex tangle of plots involving extraterrestrial invasion and secret military collaborations. A race of god-like space beings have Earth in their sights and plan complete domination of our world and its resources.  Their minions (red-skinned devils on steroids) have created a half-human super warrior as part of their nefarious schemes; the statuesque and ascerbic Lila. Luckily for us, however, Lila has a will of her own - and then some - and has sided with the humans... which is fortunate as the odds are stacked very much against the survival of our species in the face of such a dire threat. Astral Vengeance #2 is the continuation of the explosive Astral saga by writer/producer Jay Magnum and artist Ariel Medel in which an exotic supe...

Review: Chiasm #0

Image
I'm never gonna be normal, am I? Nope! Sorry, buddy! We've traveled across time and space.  Trust me when I tell you...  Normal kinda sucks.   Desmond Phillips is being disruptive... His classmates want to know why, if he had the surgery, does he still have to SNIFF the paper to read it? He explained that the doctors removed the tumour but his eyesight is still affected.  Chiasm by writer/artist Doug Knight is a semi-autobiographical story. When Doug was six he was diagnosed with cancer; a tumour located in the optic chiasm above the pituitary gland. Chemotherapy reduced the size of the tumour but it had already damaged his optic nerves, drastically limiting his sight. Not to be defeated by this, young Doug defiantly became an avid artist. When he grew up he became a tattoo artist and, more recently, a creator of comics.  All this despite being legally blind! In Chiasm #0 we join Desmond as he returns to school after his operation to try and get ...
