Review: Astral Vengeance #2

Government conspiracies? Exploding space shuttles? Shadowy genetic research? Rampaging muscular demonic alien hybrid mutants complete with horns, fangs and razor-sharp claws?

It's all in a day's work for scientist Jeannie Lewis, caught up in a complex tangle of plots involving extraterrestrial invasion and secret military collaborations. A race of god-like space beings have Earth in their sights and plan complete domination of our world and its resources.

Their minions (red-skinned devils on steroids) have created a half-human super warrior as part of their nefarious schemes; the statuesque and ascerbic Lila. Luckily for us, however, Lila has a will of her own - and then some - and has sided with the humans... which is fortunate as the odds are stacked very much against the survival of our species in the face of such a dire threat.

Astral Vengeance #2 is the continuation of the explosive Astral saga by writer/producer Jay Magnum and artist Ariel Medel in which an exotic superheroine clad only in shiny lilac lycra hot pants and boob-tube, and whose hand morphs into a powerful laser blaster, faces off against a variety of otherworldly monstrosities.

And of course this would not be a serious sci-fi action thriller without the addition of human villains to the mix; the unscrupulous powers-that-be who see alien DNA as just another weapon of mass exploitation to be grasped and utilised in the cause of international one-upmanship...

Lila and Jeannie, along with Jeannie's deaf Goth daughter Angelica and Russian teen hacker Rob are fleeing the ferocious mutations whilst also trying to stay one step ahead of the military. The battles are many and visually spectacular, as has been the style of this story since the beginning, the pace relentless and exhilarating.

Our heroes are once more fighting for their lives with only the slimmest of chances of survival. Their courage and determination has seen them through so far ... Will it be enough to save the day?
