Review: Gritt Grimstone: Tales From a Far Out Future
Grizzled space veteran and living legend Gritt Grimstone is on board a ship cruising through the solar system. Preparations for a party to celebrate his 104th birthday are underway. A bored little boy seeks diversion... "Don't you have like a bazillion stories or something?"
So begins Gritt Grimstone: Tales From A Far Out Future by writer Drew D. Lenhart and artists Hernan Molina and Rowel Roque, an anthology of tall tales told by the titular protagonist to his young audience of one.
We are in retro/classic sci-fi territory here, with missions to the moons of Jupiter, dodging asteroids and battling grotesque alien villains. It is a light-hearted romp through nostalgic space with several twists and turns along the way. The action-packed escapades are smoothly rendered by the artists with a satisfying balance of the dramatic with the comic. If the tongue-in-cheek adventurous tone feels familiar, you may have read Lenhart's Caspian Porter series, in which expectations of heroism are likewise humorously subverted.
Our hero has faced an array of perilous challenges in his career, according to his own account, but how much of his recollections are a true version of actual events? The dividing line between reality and illusion is crossed and re-crossed several times in this tangled narrative. Who can trust the ramblings of a geriatric spacer in dark, mysterious universe where nobody may be who - or what - they appear to be?
