Review: Wild Void

A new dawn! More than three Earth years have passed since the fall of the Terran Empire and the collapse of civilization.

But freedom has its price. The remains' centre is dominated by lawlessness and piracy and the void has never been more wild...

The colonies at the frontier are the only places where some order is still maintained.

Gunnar, a former detective, who works as a freelancer to make ends meet and protect freedom from chaos, is on his way to finish a job...

It is the Earth year 2533 and Gunnar sets down on the planet Gemini 2 in the Helen Nebula. It is a rocky, dusty wasteland of a world with just a few thousand inhabitants. A huge mechanical ring - a 'jump gate' - hangs in the sky over the city; a transportation portal for supplies (including much needed water from the ocean world Gemini Prime). It has a Wild West, frontier town vibe, the streets peppered with junkies hooked on "dust" and disreputable young women offering companionship to weary travellers.

Gunnar's job is to deliver a criminal to the prison Hell's Maw, staffed by robot guards. Once his mission is completed he indulges in a little recreation with one of the local ladies (a freelancer like himself, except that she specialises in massage and other services).

The pleasing afterglow is shattered, however, when the jump gate opens and trouble starts to literally fall from the sky...

Wild Void by writer Alexander "Timberwolf" Paul and artist Luka Brico is a lone gun drama with a hint of mystery, brought to life with some truly captivating artwork. Brico has an offbeat, almost nostalgic 70s style and an adept use of colour, creating some vibrantly surreal images.

What Gunnar thought was a simple job, done and dusted, is about to land him in the middle of something much more challenging.
