Review: Armor
Being a teenager is fraught with challenges. Being sixteen and moving home with your dad and kid sister to a distant town and starting a new school is bound to throw many more of those challenges your way: being the awkward new kid, making new friends, dealing with bullies, having to look out for said kid sister, having to follow Dad's dumb rules, having to hide the piece of alien technology you found in a crashed UFO...
Okay, that last one probably wasn't quite so typical, but for Jason King his first week in a new school is about to become far from ordinary.
Armor by writer Marcel Dupree and artists Joel Cotejar and Danielle Cosentino is an action adventure meets teen drama, two worlds colliding with explosive results.
Far out in the void of space, a war between two races has raged for many years. Scientist Kizan Je'diah of Weaporopara has created a new weapon that could shift the balance of power and bring an end to the war. Lord Novaden of the enemy side naturally wants to acquire this prize in order to ensure victory for his own people. To keep it out of the wrong hands, Kizan pilots a ship to a small, protected planet that is off-limits to both sides of the conflict: a primitive little backwater called Earth...
Jason finds the alien tech to be very useful - antigravity sure cuts down his travel time to school - but also somewhat annoying, as it appears to have a mind of its own. Those concerns pale to nothing, however, when aggressive aliens come to Earth in search of the exotic weapon and Jason has to learn how to use its capabilities.... and fast.
This has a youthful, fresh feel to this, with bold, dynamic artwork and a story that races along. There is intrigue too: Jason's dad is more than just the boring grown-up figure; he knows more than he lets on. There is promise here for more possibilities to unfold, more fascinating avenues to be explored. our hero also has to content with his little sister's meddling and four mysterious henchmen with enhanced abilities who also have an interest in his discovery. A boy in a super-powered suit is just the beginning of this tale ...
There is plenty of startling action with delightfully bizarre creatures and characters battling it out, all in the drama-rich environment of a busy high school. In the timeless comics tradition an 'ordinary' youngster suddenly has heroism thrust upon him: can Jason rise to the challenge?
