Review: Astral Evolution
Ex-astronaut John DeVane, Russian hacker teen prodigy Rob and human-alien hybrid Lila are working for AXE, the secret government agency looking out for Earth's interests in response to threats from outer space. When an object is tracked emerging from the alien 'wormtube' above Earth and heading for the North Pole, DeVane and Lila lead a team to check it out.
But others are also interested in the new arrival and are prepared to use deadly force to keep it for themselves...
The high-octane action soon kicks in once more, with Lila (still clad only in hot pants and boob tube, even when slogging through the Arctic snow, she's that kinda gal) kicking ass with aplomb as before. We also get a little peek into her past life as an Egyptian royal, hinting that the Astrals' plans for Earth have been millennia in the making.
Just as some questions are answered, however, new ones arise. As ever, the human race's struggle against the extraterrestrial threat is hampered by its own internicene battles. Enhanced heroine Lila could be forgiven for giving up on our species given the way she is treated (and she gets A LOT thrown at her in this issue!) but luckily somehow manages to maintain an unswerving loyalty to Earth and its questionably deserving 'wastelings'...
In addition to the fights and explosions there are also dramatic threads woven in: themes of family, a team working together, people depending on each other, sacrifice, betrayal and reconciliation, people finding reasons to fight for what is right and deciding whose side they are on. In any war, there is always more than one front, the complications run wide and deep away from the main battlefield. The casualties are emotional as well as mortal.
But here, also, there can be some victories.
