Review: Stable

When a mass of dark matter passes close to the Sun and drains a huge chunk of its hydrogen, life on Earth becomes severely time-limited. Having made no progress in living off-planet, the human race is doomed... but then help arrives in the form of a message from deep space.

An advanced extraterrestrial race from the planet Kepler 186-f knows of the plight of Earth and sends details of the technology needed to build faster-than-light space arks.

Construction soon begins and within twenty years three arks are created, capable of carrying a few thousand people to the homeworld of the alien benefactors. In addition to specialised personnel, the lucky few are chosen by lottery. The rest of humanity is left behind to cope as best they can in a world where all government - all law and order - has collapsed.

And for all their splendour and vison, the arks are not free from discord either...

Stable by writers Matthew Medley and Morgan Rosenblum and artist Francesco Pisa is an epic tale of survival, first contact and the complex dramas of fragile human lives pitted against seemingly insurmountable odds. The threads of multiple characters - some on the intrepid arks, some on the dying Earth - are skilfully woven together. The arks are huge, gleaming megastructures, beautifully designed and detailed, peopled by a diverse populace and complete with spawling malls and every high-tech facility required.

The crew of the arks have to manage not just the operations of their gargantuan ships but also the interactions of the passengers. Not everyone onboard represents the best and brightest, and keeping it all together for the few months it takes to reach their destination proves to be something of a challenge... especially when it turns out that not everyone is who they appear to be.

Back on Earth ordinary people try to stay alive in a world that has descended into anarchy. We learn that that dividing line between the chosen few who set course for pastures new and those abandonned to the whims of fate also cut through family ties. Teenager Sam and his mother forage for supplies in the urban wasteland while his father sails to the stars. Child prodigy Robin gets by with the aid of her home-made robot companion. Can these refugees stay ahead of the bands of scavengers long enough to find a safe haven?

The arks approach the edge of the solar system and tension mounts as the countdown to the jump to hyperspace begins. Uncertainty plagues even the most hopeful as they prepare to leap into the unknown. Are these mysterious aliens really the altruistic angels of mercy they profess to be?

With no option but to surrender to themselves to the vagaries of fate, our hapless heroes can only hope that they have chosen the right course.
