Review: Knight Run

I fight to protect. However, the principle of battle lies in loss. That principle ... never changes

Year 430 of the Space Calendar. Humanity's colonisation of the universe is met with resistance from the 'monsters'; a formidable race of multiform aliens with diverse combat capabilities. Each planet taken over by the monsters becomes the site of a nest, centered around a queen who produces vast armies of soldier drones.

Of the many different combat monster types, the most powerful are the high-level, single-digit class such as the Bluering; a semi-humanoid metallic creature with blade-like limbs and wings, very strong and fast, capable of literally decapitating Allied soldiers and their mechas.

Anne Myer is a Knight, one of the elite warriors who fights against the high-level monsters with a specialised weapon - the 'AB sword' - which is made of a unique material that can peneteate their defensive shielding. She and her fellow Knight Pray are veterans of the war, despite their youth, having defeated some extremely dangerous high rank monsters and leading an assault on a nest, in which Anne succeeded in killing the queen.

She is contemplating retirement - at the ripe old age of twenty - having suffered many battle scars, both physical and emotional. Knights are the superheroes of human society, highly praised celebrities, but to Anne the adoration is wearying. Her victories always come with the cost of many casualties among the conventional soldiers, who are sacrificed like the pawns in a game of chess to clear a path for Knights to engage their opponents. For Anne, these losses are like an attrition of her soul.

Then there is the problem of Pray, her close friend and equally skilled fighter. She may look like a cute little blonde school girl, but Pray has a natural affinity for combat. She also has difficulties controlling her temper and forming normal relationships with other human beings, caring only for Anne. Like a big sister - or substitute mother - Anne takes responsibility for her aggressive friend, acting as advocate when Pray breaks the rules.

Knight Run by writer/artist Sungmin Kim is an action-packed, complex tale with many spectacular battles and excellent designs of alien monsters, spacecraft and weaponry. The story of the Knights away from the battlefield is just as dramatic; their relationships with each other and their psychological challenges which are like another facet to life in wartime. The manhwa art is a combination of characters with loosely rendered expressions and atmospherically composed battle sequences. In space and on the ground, the fighting is intense and overwhelming.

The war is far from ending. Anne is headhunted by a Masterknight who wants to promote her to lead the next generation of super-warriors. More glory, and more sacrifices... With losses on all fronts - including those within - can she continue to triumph?
