Review: Adventures of Cat Passmore Sub:Human

School teachers may not be the most obvious choice for adventures in the outer reaches of space and time, but it is certainly a profession that requires resourcefulness, wisdom and the ability to rise to any challenge...

Substitute teacher Cat is facing unemployment on the last day of school at Seymore Fictione High in the town of Mystery Beach, California. Meanwhile, in the outer solar system, an intergalactic school bus is having some engine trouble and needs to make an emergency landing for repairs. The third planet seems like the best option...

Adventures of Cat Passmore Sub:Human by writer/artist Will Meugnoit is a fun romp with a colourful cast of characters. Cat is a pretty young redhead with a love for teaching, sharp wits and a generous nature. Fate places her in the right place at the right time - with, due to some strangely fortunate circumstances, exactly the right supplies - to help out the stranded alien children (a diverse bunch of non-humanoid beings). She also saves the life of bus pilot Joe'e (whose face must be hidden behind a holographic mask due to the dangerous handsomeness of his species) and meets alien teachers Miss Brix'x (pink hair, green tentacles) and Miss Jinx'x (blue skin, a jealous nature and a tendency to morph into a hulking beast in the presence of any love potential rival).

Cat saves the day and is rewarded by becoming one of the first humans to join the Intergalactic Federation as its first (Sub)stitute teacher: (Human), setting the scene for further adventures. Added to the mix is Bix Braverman, the blond, square-jawed inventor/adventurer, the uncle of Tommy, one of Cat's former pupils. Bix likes to explore time and space in the oddly-designed Time Terrapin...

There is a lot packed into this first issue, with snappy dialogue and plenty of sharp, fresh artwork. The alien school kids - a quirky, multispecies group of cute little space monsters - are particularly entertaining.

Our heroine soon embarks on a bright new future, but space is full of unknown perils. Can her courage and ingenuity see her through?
