Review: Gorilla Galaxy (1)

In an automated hospital on the planet Maxchess Captain Bedlam of the Space Enforcement Guard is recuperating. He certainly deserves a break; he just saved the life of everyone everywhere from Obsidian Rex, a thoroughly unpleasant individual who tried to destroy every star in the universe. He paid a heavy price for this, however; the death of his own galaxy.

To rub salt in this wound, Obsidian Rex has escaped military prison and has fled into a region of space called the Chaos Zone.

Bedlam lays in bed watching the news and muses upon recent events, but he is not to be left in peace for too long. His brooding is interrupted by a woman's cry for help...

Gorilla Galaxy by writer Kassidy Blond and artist Javier S. Aranda is a fun, punchy offering with some very colourful characters. This is a universe populated by anthropomorphic animal aliens: Bedlam is a big, muscular blue ape, cadet Radiant Red is feline, their boss is a panda, etc... The artwork has a youthful cartoon style that will appeal to all ages, as will the storyline which is dramatic but with a light tone.

There is humour here too; cadet Red is a capable fighter despite struggling not to be distracted by Bedlam's magnificently buff physique. Luckily she manages to soldier on with a blush. A budding love interest appears to be on the cards here...

There is pregnant reptilian princess who needs saving from a band of ruthless rebel ferrets ... Will our hulking hero overcome his grief and save the day? Will his nubile young sidekick keep her passions in check and focus on the job at hand?

Gorilla Galaxy comes as half of a two-story edition of Pointman Comics issue 1, the second part being Hell is Full - a supernatural piece written by Blond, drawn by Yusuf Turgut - in which demons have taken over the Earth and totally replaced humanity.

Pointman issue 3 will be the continuation of Gorilla Galaxy, soon to be released. Watch this space...
