Review: E-Stella The Star Girl : 2 - The Girl From Beyond The Stars

"This is a desperate time..."

Flashback: Earth is a polluted mess and the Far Reacher Project is the world's only hope. A faster-than-light spacecraft will be launched to search for a new home fir the human race.

Decades earlier a similar mission led by Captain Michael Pourelle vanished without a trace. Hopefully the Far Reacher - led by two intrepid young women, E-Stella and her best friend Andromeda, will succeed where Pourelle did not.

But it all went wrong. Behind the scenes, the wealthy and powerful influenced the Project, secretly changing its objectives to limit the search programme and divert resources into creating a sanctuary on the Moon to house the elite and their families... leaving everyone else on Earth to die.

Disillusioned, E-Stella quit the project, stole a ship and went off on her own into space, on a one-woman mission to find a suitable planet for humanity. Her friend Andromeda stayed, hoping to influence the Project from within and salvage what she could of the original mission.

The Far Reacher launched and, en route to its first target world, discovered an anomaly in space: an asteroid emanating organic life signs...

Writer and artist Marcus Doidge's second instalment of the saga of sexy space chick E-Stella moves the story into a new arena. Our heroine, having been alone in space for so long (unless you count her ship Bea's AI and complement of handy all-purpose bots), now finds a new friend on an Earth-like world; an unspoiled Eden more green and full of life than she has ever known.

Her new friend is Sky, who at first glance appears to be a curvaceous blonde Amazonian cavewoman.... attributes that come in handy when they are confronted by a big alien dinosaur.

Scary indigenous beings notwithstanding, this appears to be the prize that humanity has been searching for. Objective achieved, story over? Not quite; the forces that worked against the original spirit of the Far Reacher Project have not yet finished with E-Stella and whatever wonders she may discover. The drama and mystery only deepens further...

Visually, this new chapter is like a fresh breeze. Doidge's first issue was set entirely in the dazzling void of space, with his characters inhabiting flashy but sterile environments, illuminated by glowing force fields, holograms and stars. Now our heroine is dropped into a natural landscape full of trees, rivers, mountains... and new dangers.

Our protagonist's new companion is of course, an opportunity for Doidge to continue to do what he excels at: depicting the female form in a series of energetic, athletic and aesthetically-pleasing positions. But it's not all shallow titillation, the story is complex and intriguing with many twists and turns.

E-Stella's quest continues, but she is no longer alone in the void.
