Review: Tangled River

Image
Tangled River by writer and artist Snowshadow  on Webcomics has recently been completed after six years. Teenager Tanya and her mother live in a village on a planet settled several years ago by people from the colony ship Terra Nova . Her friends include the boisterous Elika ( aka “Licorice“) whose close friend is a native boy called Kobei. The original colonists (the adult “Alphas”) have rules for the youngsters (“Betas”) but - pubescent rebelliousness being a universal constant - these are blithely flouted. The settlers live a simplified existence, thanks to the mysterious failure of all their technology soon after their arrival. Their level of subsistence is about that of the natives, who resemble Plains Indians (including their use of bows and arrows). Luckily the planet is very Earth-like and the humans can eat the indigenous flora and fauna. There are several scattered settlements which regularly trade with each other, but much of the continent they inhabit is unexpl...

Review: Super Wicked White Cell Squadron # 1

Image
“You mess with one bean … you get the whole burrito!”   School’s out for summer! Stacy and Markus are throwing a ball around on campus as their buddies Vi Tu, Leslie and Sheree pass by. But these are no ordinary college kids. These five young stars are prodigy-level students with a keen fascination for medical nanotechnology. Classes may be finished but for this bunch learning never ends. And that’s not all… When an explosion in one of the science laboratories is followed by the sudden appearance of a huge, demonically ferocious bug-eyed alien monster, it turns out that our heroes are even more exceptional. In the blink of an eye – and with a suitably inspirational call to arms – our brave scholars are transformed into gleaming armour-clad super warriors; ready, willing and more than able to whoop some extraterrestrial butt. So far, so mighty morphin’ … but this is no ordinary comic:  Super Wicked White Cell Squadron # 1 by writer/artist Doug Knight is an homage to everything...

Review: Stellarlands 2

Image
War has broken out across the universe, and the desert moon of Upentia is a strategic stronghold. Tensions brew between the human soldiers and the indigenous population, who see them as nothing but occupiers.  Lieutenant Caladin Geis is more than just another human soldier. His keen instincts uncover Eritraxian traps on Upentia, saving the lives of his comrades and helping to root out the enemy. Also, his loyalty to his unit does not prevent him from speaking out against the exploitation of the locals. The blue-skinned Atolans are tempted with job offers that are well paid but with a chilling trade-off. A mission to a remote planet gathering biological samples sounds easy enough until you realise that the planet is deep in a powerful gravity well that creates a drastic time dilation effect. A few hours work translates into decades of lost time. Returning home not long after you left, from your perspective, you find your home transformed by the years that have rushed by witho...
